Kitchen Interior Design: Everything You Need To Know About Acrylic Kitchens
Cabinets are probably one of the most important aspects of any kitchen decor. The kitchen cabinets are not only supposed to add a functional value to your modular kitchen but also add a personality to it! You can’t possibly have a gorgeous looking kitchen with absolutely drab cabinets. Right?
That’s why you should also be spending some time on deciding the kind of finish you’d like for your kitchen cabinets and shelves, apart from the kitchen layout. That’s when you’ll actually start hearing a lot about the material, acrylic.
Acrylic comes with a range of finishes and looks that you might want to consider for your kitchen. But each of them has their own pros and cons.
That’s why our expert interior designers decided to share a little about using acrylic in the kitchen before you simply use it to change the decor.
What is acrylic?
It is a non-toxic finish material often chosen because it prevents harmful toxins from reaching your food. The material is often chosen to give an extremely smooth finish to space – especially on the cabinetry.
Think about that glossy and clean looking kitchen you saw in the TV show. Yes, that’s acrylic for you!
But that’s not the only reason that people choose acrylic. Another reason why it is so popular is the number of colours you get to choose from. It doesn’t keep you stuck between the usual grey, whites or blacks. You can experiment with the brightest of colours to give your kitchen a new look altogether.
Another important aspect when choosing to go with acrylic is the type of doors you have on your cabinets. You can go for a solid acrylic door or choose the acrylic faced one. You will see that the solid acrylic doors would be more expensive as they are made of acrylic through and through. On the other hand, the acrylic faced ones would be slightly cheaper as they are only plastered with acrylic on the top.
If you ask us, both of them serve the purpose and it totally depends on your usage.
Pros of an Acrylic Kitchen
Chic Appearance: Acrylic kitchens generally appear to be much sleeker than other kitchens and this is because of the glossy finish of the material. Acrylic has a flawlessly smooth finish which gives off a very rich feel to space. Going in for elegant colours can really give a facelift to your kitchen space instantly.
Variety in Colours: Acrylic these days is available in a range of colours which opens doors to a lot of experimentation. For those of you who like to play with colours, you can fo in for acrylic and give a quirky touch to your kitchen right away.
Durability: The gloss never goes away. Use the kitchen for decades and you’ll be surprised to see any difference from the day you got it all installed. To add to the advantages of an acrylic kitchen, the material is absolutely scratch free! You can have your kitchen look brand new every single day!
Maintenance: You don’t need high end, complicated washing substances to clean off your acrylic kitchen. All you need is some water and a soft cloth to wipe off the dirt. Your kitchen will be spic and span in only a few minutes.
Cons of an Acrylic Kitchen
Although acrylic is super easy to clean, it is also equally vulnerable to catching marks and stains pretty quickly. Other than the problem of catching marks quickly, there is one problem that many people face while installing acrylic sheets. It has been found that acrylic sheets are hard to stick on to an MDF ply which is a huge drawback.
Also, when you opt for quirky colours to add to your kitchen, and if for some reason you would want to change a single sheet after a couple of years, there are high chances that you will not find the same exact colour anymore. Hence, it is a good idea to be absolutely sure of the colour you want in the first go, and even keep extra sheets of the same colour, just in case!
